Territory and Culture
In Mugello you can find traces of a history that could well belong to one of the greater European capital cities.

Situated densely along the river Sieve are numerous ancient hamlets and towns of complex construction. This once important Etruscan land became, in Roman times, the site of colonies and hamlets.

The families of the Medieval lords, such as the Giudi and the Ubaldini, soon came to compete with the City State of Florence, which was expanding and in search of "new lands". From the 14th century onward, the area underwent a period of renewed development and expansion thanks to the particular strategic and economic importance that the Mugello basin held for Florence.

The Medici, whose origins lie in the territory, and the Lorraine families considered the land a source of great pride and invested considerable sums to consolidate their presence in the area around Florence. Important structures and fortresses, castles, villas and manors remain to bear witness to that important period of development in Mugello. It is, in fact, a well-known fact that the area played an extremely important role in the development of the artistic and cultural history of Florence.

Artists such as Giotto and Beato Angelico were born here; renowned architects worked on the construction of the hamlets in the "walled lands"; and the Mugello landscape has inspired and has been depicted in numerous Florentine paintings.
